Suzi (pictured above) was looking for a place to teach yoga. Her son Jonnie, was going to the centre for after school care, which was located right at the Ponsonby Centre. She approached the manager and started teaching a few classes a week, mainly friends and family. Her partner, Paul, joined her a couple of years later, coming back from living in Australia, and Ponsonby Yoga Shala was born.
Built in 1897, Ponsonby Community Centre was initially a school. It was purchased by Auckland City Council in 1958 for use as a hall. The Centre has been rebuilt and completely refurbished since a fire in August 1999. The arsonists didn’t get it right the first time. They lit a fire that caused the water pipes to melt, which extinguished the fire. However, they tried a second time and burned one entire hall. The downstairs section was also destroyed due to water damage. Today, however, the hall is splendid,
