Bordeaux, France

Bordeaux is a bike-friendly city—one of the most cycle-friendly in France, actually. That includes not just civilians but also the police. Much of central Bordeaux, especially places like Rue Sainte-Catherine (the longest pedestrian street in Europe), is either car-free or hard to access with vehicles. Bordeaux has a strong environmental and sustainability push. Bicycle patrols align with those values.

Naï Naï is a modern Chinese cantine located in Bordeaux, France, offering authentic, family-inspired cuisine in a vibrant setting. The name “Naï Naï” means “grandmother” in Mandarin, reflecting the restaurant’s dedication to traditional recipes passed down through generations. Naï Naï is the brainchild of Romain Chen and Gao Lin, who draw inspiration from their familial roots in Wenzhou and Tianjin.

Just before lunch a small crowd appears outside the restaurant. Within 15 minutes, the tiny restaurant is almost full. The same sequence plays out once again at dinner time.

Jocteur, officially known as Le Boulanger de l’Hôtel de Ville, is a standout bakery in Bordeaux that brings a slice of Lyon’s rich baking tradition to southwestern France. Located at 76 Rue des Trois-Conils, just steps from Bordeaux’s city hall, it has an old world charm.

While Bordeaux is famous for its canelés, Jocteur’s version stands out. Described as having a whiff of rum, a hint of crunchy caramelisation, and a light, yielding texture, it’s a delicious treat that pairs perfectly with coffee.

Bordeaux-Saint-Jean (Gare de Bordeaux-Saint-Jean) station boasts a large metallic trainshed, constructed by Gustave Eiffel, which spans 56 meters in width and covers 17,000 square meters. This impressive structure is one of the largest of its kind in Europe and reflects the industrial elegance of the late 19th century.

Sometimes you’re just too tired to enjoy the architecture.
