Feoh Espresso and Roastery, Waipu

Riki at Feoh Cafe in Waipu. That’s the front end of the cafe, but there’s a lot of really cool stuff at the back as well.

The roasting area, full of clocks (all ticking away) and other uber-cool stuff. It’s like a little museum of sorts without any clutter.

Single-origin coffee stacked at the back in neat little tins.

Riki’s carving handiwork on the espresso machines. W for water and S for steam. Just in case you’re not a barista—because I guess most baristas would know (I didn’t).

Benji—the second arm of the father-son team at Feoh. Those gunny sacks of coffee make for some funky decoration, but they also absorb sound when the cafe gets a bit noisier.

Nina Quan stops in for a chat—and coffee.

Not Nina’s bags. Definitely something that Ricky picked up 🙂

The interior of the cafe, where you can sit on those gloriously rainy days. Sunny days are for the outdoors, but it’s the indoors that really shine. Normally these benches would be out on the grass, but today was rainy and almost closing time.

That’s Miles Davis with the album Bitches Brew. The coffee gets its name from the album.

Moped in the cafe. But you knew that already, right?

An iPod. This music system goes really way back!

Epilogue: Waipu has been our haunt for many years in a row. We love the dunes, the crazy sheep, the summery feel and go back often. However, we’d never run into this cafe, though it had been going for several years. On this lovely rainy day, we decided to turn in while getting back to Auckland. Kent from Hell Hole Cafe suggested we stop in here. We weren’t so sure, but the moment we saw the cafe, we knew all was well with the world. It’s not an all day cafe, so make sure you get there earlier in the day. Oh, and there’s some great Vietnamese Banh-mi on weekends. That takes a bit of time to make and probably gets snapped up quickly. This was a great stop for us and it was then time to head back to Auckland.
