FENZ = Fire and Emergency, NZ.

Rescue, Fire station, Takapuna

Training for cliff rescue.

The drill involves getting into a completely dark room. Barriers are placed in the way, and the “dummy” is often hard to find. It might even need a wall to be broken down. There are even stairs to climb, all as part of the training.

It’s a “dummy” but it’s surprisingly heavy. It’s meant to represent the weight of an average male and it’s a dead weight.

The temperature reader. If I remember clearly, it could “see in the dark” and is used to locate people trapped in a room in a fire.

A local passerby would justifiably be confused why the fire station goes by the name of Takapuna Fire Station, when it’s located at Wairau Road. It’s just that the old Takapuna Station was, well, at Takapuna and when it got moved, the name didn’t change. There’s a bell at the front of the station to remind visitors and staff of the old fire station.
